Upcoming Events

Tomorrow night RIck Grosshans will present 100 Years of Scouting thru Philately. This is his most Popular Exhibit at OKPEX 2010, expanded to complete the centennial year. It is just back from the Champion of Champions Most Popular competition in Charleston, SC at StampExpo. Unfortunately the Boy Scouts were defeated by a group of Confederate General’s letters, but it is still an honor to be invited. In fact, Grosshans has been asked to show the exhibit at other shows later this year since it is so current and topically popular.

We should have had an OPS circuit, but the APS circuit did not arrive.

HERE IS THE PROGRAM LINE UP FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR AS NOW SCHEDULED FOR THE OKLAHOMA CITY STAMP CLUB:

Christmas Party Tuesday At Mimi’s

The Oklahoma City Stamp Club will celebrate its annual Christmas Party on Tuesday, Dec. 21st at 6 PM at Mimi’s Cafe on Memorial Road, just west of May Avenue (on the north side of Kilpatrick Turnpike).  This is always a very nice evening and we hope everyone will be able to attend.  It looks like there will be cold, but DRY weather for that evening.

For our newcomers, we each order off of the menu and pay our own seperate dinner checks, so you get just what you want.  As usual Ray Janz has arranged some neat Christmas surprises.  It will almost seem like Santa Claus.

See you at 6 on Tuesday.

Cowboys of the Silver Screen FDC Ceremony in OKC

Official Program - Cowboys of the Silver Screen

Official Program - Cowboys of the Silver Screen

Cowboys of the Silver Screen Official Program

Cowboys of the Silver Screen Official Program

On April 17, 2010 Oklahoma City was honored by hosting the FDC Ceremony for the Cowboys of the Silver Screen stamps. The ceremony, held at the Cowboy Hall of Fame was attended by an estimated 200 people. I was out of town, so my beautiful wife attended for me and told me it was standing room only, although she was lucky enough to get a good seat.

The USPS sold cacheted envelopes, stamps, and even plastic protectors priced at $5 for each single and $7 for the block of 4. So a complete set of 4 singles and the block of 4 cost $27. Just another road block to getting kids into the hobby.

Report On Recent Meetings

The Oklahoma City Stamp Club holds periodic auctions of material, most of which is donated by members. Our last auction was on April 20. Ray Janz reports that 40 of 100 lots sold for a total of $140.00.

Gerald Hickman discusses the history of the US Postal Service.

On March 16th Gerald Hickman gave a very interesting program on the history of the USPS. Intrigue, personalities, lobbying, and of course politics all the way to the White House. Even though most of it happened over 40 years ago, it makes it clear that some things never change. Great program. Thanks Gerald.

OKC Stamp Club Tonight

THE Oklahoma City Stamp Club BIG AUCTION NIGHT IS 4-20-2010 with doors opening at 7PM. Don’t miss it. Lots of good material and you get to set your buy price (unless somebody out bids you). Then again, you can increase your bid – that is the fun of an auction.

If you bought something neat at TEXPEX, bring it along to share with everyone else. It looked like the whole club was there at one time or another.

NEWS FLASH !!
There will not only be an auction tonight. We have received circuits from the OPS and the APS.
Included are books on :

U.S. Revenues
U.S. 19th Century
Great Britain
Christmas Island
Canada (2)
Estonia
Europa Cyprus to Germany
Eurpopa Monaco to Sweden
Japan
Sweden
Germany
Greece

We meet upstairs in the big room now so there is lots of room.

See Ya There

For details on these events contact joecrosby@cox.net.

The plan is to meet at Johnnies restaurant and enjoy some social time together and then caravan over to nearby Ralph DeBoard’s Computer Lab at Oklahoma Christian University.

BradyHunt and Joe Crosby came up with the “theme” for this month’s meeting -

————— Oklahoma RFD’s —————

To get the juices flowing here is some basic information:

The Postal Service established free delivery of mail to rural areas in 1896. Oklahoma’s first rural route began serving customers on August 15, 1900 in Hennessey, Oklahoma. According to the Hennessey Clipper newspaper, Albert Darrow was the first Oklahoma Rural Carrier; his route was 24 miles long and covered a 31 square mile area with a population of 700. Darrow provided his own transportation, a horse and wagon and received an annual income of $500.

According to the Report of the First Assistant PMG for the fiscal year ended June 30, 1900 p. 151 this Hennessey RFD Route had l carrier traveling 25 miles.

Also, Bernie Mayer recently discovered the following available online from the USPS:

First Oklahoma RFD

Take a look at this listing and compare what you learn with what you own.

Please bring ALL of your HENNESSEY RFD covers and cards to the meeting and donate them to Joe Crosby’s collection. Seriously, Please bring any Oklahoma RFD material you have to share with the group, hand cancels, pencil and other manuscript cancels, down-to-road items, corner cards, old RFD wagons, ANYTHING.

Oh, yes, the historian of the USPS tells us that the maps for RFD routes (nationwide) were all destroyed during the late depression era, to save money since the archives were getting too full and there were no funds for expansion. So, if you happen to have THE Oklahoma RFD route map in your personal archive, please share that with the group as well.
See you there !

Next Meeting – March 16

The next meeting of the Oklahoma City Stamp Club will be March 16 at 7 PM. The program will be a presentation by Gerald Hickman who will share his thoughts on the most important highlights from U.S. Postal History.

And don’t forget our first meeting next month!!

Apr 6: John Lovett, Western History Collection Curator, Oklahoma Historic Photographs slide presentation.

If you have any suggestions for future programs, please contact Joe Crosby at joecrosby@cox.net. It does not have to be you volunteering to do a program, although that would be wonderful. It just needs to be a subject of interest to your fellow club members.
